Native Woodland Conservation
Ireland’s native woodlands are a vital part of our natural heritage, offering a wealth of ecosystem benefits. These woodlands play a crucial role in preserving biodiversity, improving soil and water quality, and helping us address the challenges posed by climate change.
The Native Woodland Conservation (NWC) Scheme promotes sustainable, close-to-nature management practices that benefit wildlife, protect water resources, and support climate action. Through this scheme, there are opportunities to revive traditional woodland management methods that are intrinsic to Ireland’s rural landscape. It also helps create spaces for local recreation and provides valuable opportunities for woodland education and environmental awareness.
Historically, many of Ireland’s native woodlands have experienced periods of neglect or under-management. The NWC Scheme offers essential support and guidance to woodland owners, encouraging the thoughtful restoration and long-term stewardship of these precious habitats, ensuring their sustainability for generations to come.
